Origin: 
Mason and Maule (1960) describe the Giriama as a strain of the Tuni cattle in Kenya maintained by the Giriama tribesmen of the Kenya coast from Lamu to Mombassa. The Tuni are categorized as Zenga type (intermediate zebu sanga). The Tuni, or Jiddu as they are known in Somalia, originate in Somalia. However, Rege and Tawah (1999) identified the Giriama as a breed on its own, and classified it as a Small East African Zebu type within the Kenya cluster.
