In some mountainous areas the nomadic system still persists. These swamp buffaloes are grazed on pasture all year round and only kept indoors for sale or for other purposes and at night. In the mountain region the animals endure poor quality of green fodder and insufficient water supply. There is significant range in body weight and body size. The genetic potential of breed has been largely unexplored. Genetic selection for work capacity has been carried out.
