Somali Shorthorned zebu group
Special Characteristics:
Rather small hump; short and thin horns which can often be loose or even absent; the back slopes sharply upwards so that the rump can be as high as 10 cm higher than the withers; coat colour is often red, sometimes with patches of black (Felius, 1995).
Main Location:
Maintained by the Garre (Gherra) Somali tribe who Iive in the middle and upper Webbe Shibeli area of southern Ethiopia.
Garre cattle are named after the tribe who live in the middle and upper Webbe Shibeli area of southern Somalia. These Small East African Zebu cattle are believed to have descended from the recent introductions of zebu into Africa from Asia, particularly the Arabian Peninsula. Their larger body size than the rest of Somali Zebu suggests that they may have ancestral linkages with cattle of the Large East African Zebu group, like the Boran (Rege and Tawah, 1999).
