Special Characteristics: 
The western strain is variable in size and colour, roan and spotted being quite common; they have a small hump and lyre-shaped horns. The eastern strains are less variable in morphology and are spread in small, isolated pockets.
Main Location: 
Found in north Somalia from the Borama Hargesia area of the north-west province of Somalia bordering Jijiga on the Ethiopian border (the western strain) to the Burao area on the eastern side of north-east province of Somalia (the eastern strain).
Origin: 
Cattle of the Somali Shorthorned Zebu group are believed to have descended from the recent introductions of zebu into Africa from Asia, including the Arabian Peninsula (Rege and Tawah, 1999).
