Found in southern Sudan; in some districts, local varieties are known: the Nilotic variety of this sheep are maintained by the Dinka, Nuer and Shilluk tribes; the Nuba maned variety inhabits the Nuba mountains of the southern Sudan; the Southern/Ingessana variety occupies the Ingessana Hills, the Latuka-Bari area and the Toposa area of southern Sudan (Mason and Maule, 1960). It is not known how much of this diversity is still maintained in southern Sudan after long years of instability.
