The Venda is fairly large and lays tinted eggs of a generous size. The hens are broody with a good mothering ability.

The breed was first described by a veterinarian, Dr. Naas Coetzee, who noticed these distinctive chickens in the Venda area of the Northern Province. And Similar chickens were latter identified in the Southern Cape and in the Qua-Qua region of the Free State Province, the name derived from the original description has been retained.
