Ankole group
Special Characteristics:
Medium cervico-thoracic hump and moderate dewlap; long sickle shaped horns; the sacrum is slightly higher than the withers; coat colour is mostly red, black or fawn, but mixtures of colours also occur.
Main Location:
Found in west and southwest of Lake Kivu in eastern DR Congo.
The original cattle were brought to western and southern Uganda by Hamitic tribes migrating from north-eastern Africa and possibly the Sahel in the 13th and 14th centuries. The Ankole cattle with their characteristic long horns probably evolved around present-day Uganda, and the Bashi breed of today appears to have resulted from the interbreeding of the original Humpless Shorthorn cattle and the Ankole cattle. Hence, the Bashi have smaller body, shorter horns finer boned than the Ankole type, sanga breeds (Felius, 1995). Others report that the agricultural Bashi tribe brought these cattle in the 17th century and settled in their present location (Rege and Tawah, 1999).
