Somali family

This goat type is the smallest goat of Somalia, the females averaging 65 cm in height and 26 kg in weight; it is always long-haired and usually light or dark-brown in colour; the horns and ears are short and erect; despite its small size, it is a good milker, yielding 1-2 kg daily; highly fertile with frequent twins and triplets (Mason and Maule, 1960).

Inhabits parts of the northern parts of Somalia as well as some areas in the south along the coast (Mason and Maule, 1960).

Introduced by Arabian traders from Arabia (Epstein, 1971).
