Bapedi, Zulu
Special Characteristics:
Coat colour is usually black, brown or reddish in plain pattern but broken colours are not uncommon; coat is hairy and long along the back and on rib cage; small body size; horns usually present in males but absent in females; ears are short, almost non-existent in many sheep; legs are long in proportion to overall size.
Main Location:
Limited to Swaziland; the climate is subtropical and subhumid at low altitudes; the production system is principally agro-pastoral (Wilson, 1991).
The original Nguni sheep migrated to southern Africa with the Nguni people between 200 and 400 AD down the eastern coast to the area of their present distribution (Zululand and Swaziland). In South Africa, Nguni flocks were established at the Makhathini Research Station and at the University of Zululand (Ramsay et al., n.d.).
