Origin:
Development of the Bonsmara was initiated in the 1920s through 1930 in South Africa for a beef breed adapted to local hot climate and tick challenge. The local Africander breed provided the foundation stock and it constituted 5/8 of the breed composition. The European breeds of Hereford and Shorthorn equally contributed 3/16th part of the final composite. The breed was recognized in 1964, and its breed improvement program has been operating since then. The breed was registered in 1972.
