Main Location:
Inhabits the dry areas of central Tanzania.
Origin:
Development of the composite breed was initiated in Tanzania in 1958, based on results of crossbreeding work started in the 1930s. The objective was to develop a dual-purpose (milk and beef) animal suitable for the dry areas of central Tanzania. The breed is composed of 35% Red Sindihi, 20% Sahiwal, 20% Tanganika Zebu, 10% Boran, 5% Ankole and 10% Bos taurus (mainly Ayrshire). The program could not be sustained without a multiplication scheme to maintain the breed, there were less than 1500 animals in 1997, and the breed was then declared at risk. The breed has not been registered.
