There is considerable confusion of terminology in this type; in general the Uda sheep inhabits the semi-arid lowlands and adjoining arid areas of northern Nigeria; the Yankasa variety inhabits semi-arid and sub-humid areas of northern and north-central Nigeria; Yankasa is the Hausa word for local; the production systems are agro-pastoral and pastoral transhumant (Wilson, 1991).
